R&D Mechanical Engineer
GA Drilling
Job Description
Role Snapshot
You’ll design, analyze, and mature downhole drilling systems and the associated tooling and test equipment that make ultra-deep geothermal practical. Based at GA Drilling’s Product Centre in Rio de Janeiro, you’ll work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality & Compliance to move the technology from its current TRL 4/5 prototype and rig-test stage to TRL 8 field qualification. You’ll own the design to build to test to redesign loop, ensuring the tools are safe, reliable, efficient, and field-ready.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and analyze mechanical components, systems, tooling, and test equipment, creating 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and controlled engineering data
- Develop multi-domain hydraulic, mechanical, and control models, using simulation and test results to improve system performance and prediction accuracy
- Evaluate the effects of drilling-fluid viscosity, density, and temperature using CFD, system-level hydraulic models, and fluid-property or rheology data
- Mature designs through TRL gates, including qualification and validation test plans, design-for-manufacture reviews, technical risk management, and design freeze
- Own hands-on assembly, disassembly, maintenance, repair, testing, integration, and commissioning procedures as the tools mature
- Lead failure diagnosis and root-cause analysis, maintain clear technical documentation, and collaborate across functions and suppliers to ensure on time, on spec deployment
What You Bring
Technical Toolkit
- 3D parametric CAD, preferably Autodesk Inventor, with manufacturing drawings, GD&T, BOMs, revisions, and PDM workflows such as Autodesk Vault
- FEA, stress and thermal calculations, DFM, and design justification
- MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, hydraulics, and multi-domain system modelling
- CFD and fluid-property evaluation tools for non-Newtonian, high-temperature fluids
- HSE standards, product compliance, design controls, and technical risk management
Professional Experience
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; MSc is a plus
- Proven experience designing and manufacturing mechanical components and progressing hardware from prototype through qualification and field deployment
- Hands-on experience with the assembly, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of complex mechanical or electromechanical systems
- Work independently in fast-moving engineering environments, applying sound judgement while maintaining strong documentation and cross-functional communication
- Nice to have
- Downhole or drilling-tool design, with oil and gas or geothermal domain exposure
- Experience with hydraulics, electromechanical systems, field commissioning, and failure reporting
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Vault, MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape, ANSYS Fluent/CFX, Autodesk CFD, or comparable toolchains
Languages
- English - B2 (must have)
Benefits
- Employer pension fund contributions
- Flexible working hours
- Health Insurance plan for whole family
- Professional training and education free of charge and within working hours
- Transport and meal allowance
